O. Carroll and Nelle Noel Memorial Scholarship

As a child, Janet (Noel) Coleman grew up on the University of Wichita campus where her father, O. Carroll Noel, was a professor in the College of Education. During the 1950s, she studied education at WU, was student body president and a member of Mortar Board and the debate squad. In 1957, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education and later earned her master’s degree in human relations from the University of Ohio. After settling with her family in Nebraska, she taught special education and was a school psychologist.

In 1973, Mrs. Coleman established the O. Carroll and Nelle Noel Memorial Scholarship for education students. Her scholarship was a tribute to her parents and her father’s 25-year teaching career at WU. Additionally, she included provisions in her estate plans for a second scholarship to bear her name. Sharing her feelings for her alma mater, she commented, ‘I feel like everything I learned, pretty much everything I became, I can attribute to Wichita U.’ Through her scholarships, Ms. Coleman hopes to not only help students pursue higher education, but encourage others to give, as well.
