Adra C. Jones Endowed Scholarship

Adra C. Jones was born in 1898 in Goddard, Kan. She began teaching in a rural one-room school east of Goddard, later moving to the Goddard Public Schools. In 1941 she moved to Wichita and taught first and second grade in the Wichita Public Schools until her retirement in 1968. After retirement, she taught in the Wichita Catholic Schools and a pre-school.

Her fianc√© was killed in World War I and she never married. She devoted herself to teaching, particularly reading to children. Years later, many adults would come up to her to tell her she was their ‘favorite teacher.’

In 1949 she obtained her master’s in elementary education at the University of Wichita. To recognize her excellence in classroom education, the Adra C. Jones Endowed Scholarship was established by her family in 1998 to provide support during the student teaching semester.
