Anna Elizabeth Walsh Humanities Scholarship

As a child, Kathleen Walsh had her picture taken with her mother, Anna Elizabeth, in front of Fairmount Hall (which later became Fairmount College). In 1928, Kathleen would receive her degree in general studies, with a major in English and a minor in history, and her master’s in liberal studies in 1939, both from Wichita University. Her parents were inspiring educators, passing along that passion to Kathleen. A Kansas Teachers Hall of Fame honoree, her own teaching career spanned 44 years. She also was the first of only two women to serve as chair of the Board of Directors of the Kansas State Teacher s Association. She and her father, J. Martyn Walsh, co-authored the Plain English Handbook, at one time the best-selling grammar handbook on the market. In 1994, Miss Walsh established the Anna Elizabeth Walsh Humanities Scholarship in honor of her mother; a continuation of the Walsh family devotion to education.
