Anna Kathleen Walsh English Scholarship

In 1928, Kathleen Walsh received her degree in general studies, with a major in English and a minor in history, and her master’s degree in liberal studies in 1939, both from Wichita University. The daughter of two exceptional educators, her own teaching career spanned 44 years, 34 of which she spent at Allison Junior High School in Wichita until her retirement in 1972. A Kansas Teachers Hall of Fame honoree, she was the first of only two women to serve as chair of the Board of Directors of the Kansas State Teacher’s Association. She and her father, J. Martyn Walsh, both shared a passion for the English language, which led to the co-authoring of the Plain English Handbook, at one time the best-selling grammar handbook on the market. In 1994, Kathleen’s lifelong devotion to education created the Anna Kathleen Walsh English Scholarship. Miss Walsh is the recipient of the WSU Distinguished Alumni Award, as well as the Fairmount Founder’s Award.
