Paul H. Gerling Public Affairs Internship

Mr. Paul H. Gerling moved to Wichita during World War II as an employer of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s War Food Administration. With a degree in economics and public finance, Mr. Gerling began his ‘watchdog’ efforts, speaking before the Wichita City Commission, contacting public officials and running for elective office. A life-long advocate of citizen involvement, he remained deeply concerned with the well-being of the city of Wichita and its people. As a retired Community Credit Union Manager and member of the Citizen Participation Organization, his voice never wavered as he fought for the common citizen.

With a doctorate in sociology, his wife, Dr. Amy Gerling, joined the faculty of the University of Wichita in 1947, becoming chair of the sociology department. Having entered the predominately male field of sociology, she helped pave the way for many women. The first person to survey daycare needs in Wichita during the late 1940s, she was instrumental in establishing the Wichita Downtown Day Care Center in 1970. An important role model as teacher, professional and activist, she retired from WSU in 1975.

When Mr. Gerling died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident, family and friends established the Gerling internship in honor of his political activism. In 1990, upon the passing of Mrs. Gerling, contributions were added to the fund in her memory. This internship enriches the academic careers of students, while continuing the legacy of two important community activists.
