Society of 1895 Celebration with president John Bardo, Elizabeth King, Beth Lindquist and David Caylor

From Wichita to Phoenix, Newton to South Africa and numerous states in between, new members were welcomed into the Society of 1895 on April 4 at the Marcus Welcome Center.

Mike Lamb, WSU Foundation vice president for planned and annual giving, Elizabeth King, WSU Foundation president and CEO, and WSU President John Bardo spoke to the importance of legacy gifts to the university.

“By establishing a deferred gift through the WSU Foundation, you have recognized the power of planned giving and its impact on tomorrow’s Wichita State students,” said Lamb.

“As benefactors, you have stepped up and said that this place matters to you,” said Bardo. “I want to make sure it does so in the future.”

King echoed his sentiments by saying that their planned gifts shared the commonality of the love and commitment that they have for Wichita State.

Lamb showed a video of Dominic Canare, a new member to the society last year and one of the youngest members. Canare, a 2008 WSU graduate with a master’s degree in computer science, believes that education is the way to change the world and has established a scholarship, which will be supported by his legacy gift, that will rotate colleges each year. Canare, whose work requires him to travel between Wichita and California several times a month, was in the audience.

Entertainment was provided by WSU junior Abby Lingg who performed two piano pieces by Nikolai Kapustin and Chopin. Lingg is pursuing a double major in piano performance and Spanish. She helped conclude the celebration by accompanying attendees as they sang the WSU alma mater.
