With scholarship assistance, WSU students pursue their dreams

Private support for scholarships and fellowships is vital to Wichita State’s ability to help make college as affordable as possible for as many students as possible. Scholarship aid helps inspire and motivate students while providing them a more well-rounded college experience.

On this page, we meet two students who are pursuing their degrees with the help of scholarships.

Jose Carlos

Jose Carlos, 19, Wichita
Britt M. Brown Scholarship in Business
Academics: Sophomore majoring in entrepreneurship
Career aspirations: I would like to run my own business, even though at this time I am not quite sure what type of business that would be. Hopefully, after graduating, I will have a better idea of what type of business I would like to run, as well as have the knowledge to do so.

Why Wichita State?
I chose to attend Wichita State because it is near home, therefore making it more economical for my family and me. Also, it was highly recommended to me by friends and family.

How does the scholarship you receive impact your educational journey?
My scholarship alleviates the financial burden on me and my family. It provides me with the extra time to focus on my studies, instead of having to work full-time. Without the aid of scholarships, my schedule would be much more difficult, forcing me to find other forms of income while still attending school full-time.

What person would you choose if you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead?
I don't really have a role model or hero, but I do look up to great people like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Warren Buffet. I would like to have dinner with Warren Buffet, as he is a very successful person and seems really humble.

Angie Collins

Angie Collins, 18, Las Vegas
WSU Foundation Core Values Scholarship
Academics: Freshman majoring in nursing and minoring in psychology.
Career aspirations: From an early age, I have been extremely passionate about the medical field. But it was not until I was older that I decided to pursue a career in nursing. I volunteered in the ER department at my hospital in Las Vegas and fell in love with trauma care. So my career aspiration is to graduate with my nursing degree and then continue by specializing in trauma. I am also considering a future in the military as a nurse, following in my uncle's footsteps.

Why Wichita State?
The first time I stepped foot on campus, I knew I was in the right place. I felt at home, and my heart has been stuck here ever since.

How does the scholarship you receive impact your educational journey?
I knew that once I hit college, the debt was going to flood me. My biggest goal was to avoid just that. I wanted to not have to stress about putting myself through school, and just enjoy it like any college student should. So, thanks to the WSU Foundation, I am able to do just that. I cannot thank them enough for providing me this opportunity.

What person has most influenced your life, or is a role model to you?
That person would have to be my older brother, Cody, who had the most impact on me growing up. I looked up to him and always followed his lead. He could always relate to what I was going through, and always had the right thing to say. My late uncle, Brian, also is a role model. He was active duty in the Army and went on four tours. His dedication to our country inspired me to join the reserves and to consider the possibility of enlisting upon graduation to take my nursing degree into the military.
