Distinguished faculty and their donors honored at lunch

Jean Garbey and Robert Weems

Jean Garvey and Robert Weems enjoy visiting during the Faculty of Excellence Luncheon. Weems is the Willard W. Garvey Distinguished Professor in Business History.

Words of heartfelt appreciation and praise were offered by several Wichita State administrators on Oct. 30 to a roomful of WSU faculty and the donors supporting their work at the 2012 Faculty of Excellence Luncheon.

WSU President John Bardo, Elizabeth King, WSU Foundation president and CEO, Keith Pickus, interim provost, and Bill Moore, WSU Foundation Board of Directors chair, spoke of the elite group of faculty who are the drawing cards for students to enroll and stay at WSU. They also applauded the donors who enable WSU to hire the best and the brightest.

Robert Weems, the Willard W. Garvey Distinguished Professor in Business History, was the guest speaker, briefly discussing his research in African American business history. He talked about how the Garvey professorship has allowed him to research, document and preserve a significant aspect of local history. He even shared a link between WSU and Wichita’s African American community by showing an ad for the Sexton Tailoring Company, owned by almnus Linwood Sexton’s father and grandfather to WSU Athletic Director Eric Sexton.

The event, which attracted about 70 attendees, concluded with music by the John Goering Trio.
