In Memoriam - Remembering friends who shared their lives with Wichita State

Mickey Armstrong
Bruce Peterman

    Bruce E. Peterman

The final gift Mr. Peterman made to Wichita State, his alma mater, was in honor of his wife of 63 years, Connie. After Connie’s death in the fall of 2015, Mr. Peterman endowed a generous scholarship in the College of Fine Arts to recognize his wife’s passion for music and painting. The many watercolors displayed in their home were a comfort to Mr. Peterman in the months after Connie’s death. During their lives, Bruce and Connie also were strong supporters of the College of Engineering. They established a scholarship for engineering students in 1996 and continued growing it through the years. Mr. Peterman earned a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering in 1955 and a master’s in the same field in 1961. He had a 40-year career with Cessna Aircraft Co. Mr. Peterman died July 4 at the age of 85. He is survived by three children, eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

    Virginia Ann O’Bleness

When Mrs. O’Bleness’ son was killed in a highway crash in 2010, she and her husband, Robert, decided to honor his memory by creating a scholarship in the College of Health Professions at Wichita State. They chose Health Professions because they wanted to help educate someone who epitomized the same kind of caring instinct their son displayed throughout his short life. Virginia and Robert also supported Wichita State by pledging a generous gift to the university from their estate. Mrs. O’Bleness died Aug. 1 at the age of 81. She and Robert shared a lifetime of mutual interests, including attending the Wichita Symphony and opera productions. They traveled all over the world together. Mrs. O’Bleness was a life member of Delta Theta Chi sorority. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, three daughters and six grandchildren.
