In Memoriam - Joyce F. Smith
Wilson K. Cadman
Joyce F. Smith

Mrs. Smith was a proud member of the WSU Shocker family. Wife of Bert L. Smith, the longtime professor and chair of the WSU Aerospace Engineering Department, Mrs. Smith began attending Wichita State part-time after her 38th birthday. She graduated cum laude in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and received her master’s degree in communications in 1984. She founded JFS Management/Communications and continued to work with clients for the next 25 years. Her decision to get a college degree in her late 30s inspired her children, Kevin and Erin, who both graduated from Wichita State in the 1980s.

In addition to running her own company, Mrs. Smith helped found the Business Women's Golf League, helped coordinate the Wichita Women's Junior Girls Golf Tournament, and held several positions in the Kansas Women's Golf Association.

Always an active member of the WSU faculty wives organization, Mrs. Smith also participated in the Engineering Dean’s Circle and was a life member of the WSU Alumni Association. She was a Plaza of Heroines honoree. Mrs. Smith supported WSU financially, donating to areas such as KMUW 89.1, Battery for Baseball and Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. In 2010, Mrs. Smith endowed the Bert L. Smith Memorial Scholarship in Aerospace Engineering in honor of her husband, who died that year. Mrs. Smith passed away on May 6, at the age of 86, after a long illness. She is survived by her son and daughter, as well as three grandchildren.
