Meet Sharon Iorio – member of the Promise for the Future campaign

Since the launch of the Promise for the Future campaign, we have been publishing the thoughts of our cabinet members regarding planned giving, WSU and their personal philanthropic philosophies. Featured have been Julie Scherz ’69, ’71, ’89, Phil Neff ’64, Justus Fugate ’60, ’62, Anita Jones ’53, Tony Durano ’85, Roger Lowe, Bryan Hanning ’80 and now Sharon Iorio. Please continue reading future issues of Horizon to meet more members.

To learn about the campaign, co-chaired by Cindy ’77, ’85 and Barry Schwan, read the cover story of the 2010 Summer Horizon on the WSU Foundation’s website.

“Those coming before me believed in the power of education
and greatly enhanced my work at WSU through their generosity.
This, in turn, led my husband and me to think about what we
could do to further education by creating a planned gift
and joining a great WSU tradition.”

Sharon Iorio

Sharon Iorio, dean of the WSU College of Education and member of the Promise for the Future campaign cabinet

Since student teaching is the capstone of the university experience for our education majors, I personally ask them to join me in making a promise to never forget the power of education to enhance the lives of individuals and change the world for the better.

Serving on the Promise for the Future campaign cabinet gives me occasion to recollect that promise I’ve made so often, consider my time at WSU and reflect on gains made over the years — many of them direct outcomes of gifts to the WSU Foundation.

I’ve seen scholarships and fellowships that make a university education possible for wonderful students whom I know would otherwise not have had the financial support to remain at the university. I have watched the number of endowed professors grow from a handful to more than 30 highly competent academicians who bring to our students and Wichita a wealth of new ideas for community development and new directions for learning. I have seen state-of-the-art technology made available for students and faculty to learn the skills necessary for success in 21st-century careers.

It’s an honor to work with new planned gift donors and share in their beliefs of supporting quality education through WSU.
