John A. “Jack” See’s unplanned visit with his neighbor, Jim Rhatigan (right), WSU Foundation consultant, resulted in the creation of the endowed John A. See Engineering Scholarship. Beginning this fall, the fund will benefit a minimum of eight engineering students.

In 2007, John A. “Jack” See approached his neighbor Jim Rhatigan, WSU Foundation consultant, regarding a gift he had been thinking about.

What eventually became the John A. See Endowed Health and Emergency Fund now assists students encountering emergency medical expenses not covered by insurance. See felt that in some cases, injury or illness might set back or even end students’ career goals. As it will for decades to come, the substantial gift already has benefitted deserving students.

In June 2011, See was driving past Rhatigan and his wife — who were out for a neighborhood walk — when he stopped his car to inform Rhatigan that he was thinking about another gift. As a result of that unplanned visit, See established the endowed John A. See Engineering Scholarship.

“Jack is a wonderful man, wanting to help students with no thought of recognition,” said Rhatigan. “Because of him, I have been doing more walking in the neighborhood!”

See’s generous gift will provide scholarships for a minimum of eight engineering students annually, beginning immediately.

See, who arrived in Wichita in 1951, served for many years as a manager in the engineering department at Boeing.
