In Memoriam – Dr. Eugene Kaufman

Dr. Eugene Kaufman

Dr. Eugene “Gene” E. Kaufman, retired surgeon, died on July 5, 2011. Kaufman, who graduated top of his class at the Kansas School of Medicine, interned at Wesley Hospital in Wichita. Following this, Kaufman served his residency in Minnesota, where he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Naval Medical Corps. He served aboard the USS El Dorado in the Pacific Ocean as a medical officer and surgeon. After being discharged, Kaufman established a medical practice in Wichita. He was board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons.

Kaufman was a member of the American Medical Association, the Medical Society of Sedgwick County, Kansas Orthopedic Society, Mid-Central State Orthopedic Society, the Wichita Surgical Center and the Clinical Orthopedic Society. Kaufman also was a founding father of the Mid-American Orthopedic Association, serving as president and in several other positions.

Kaufman became the Wichita State University Shockers team physician and was known as the “Shock Doc.” He was a President’s Club Life Member, member of the Society of 1895 and served on the Student Athletic Scholarship Organization Board of Directors. He primarily gave to Shocker athletic programs, the Student Athletic Scholarship Organization and the WSU Endowed Theater Support fund.

Kaufman’s widow, Linda Constable, is an attorney with Fleeson Gooing Coulson and Kitch and co-founded Spay-Neuter Kansas.
