Part of something bigger

James Krstolich ’15 believes the best partnerships begin with listening; a philosophy that has followed him throughout his career.

As the director of community relations and philanthropic partnerships at IdeaTek, Krstolich strengthens digital connections and expands broadband access across Kansas communities while creating opportunities and advocating for economic growth and community engagement.

“Wichita State helped me realize that there’s more to give to the community,” he says. “It helped me grow as a leader and introduced me to all different types of different people.”

The former Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter president, Marketing & Business Management graduate, and 2026 Wichita Business Journal 40 under 40 honoree’s commitment to service extends beyond his professional role. Krstolich serves on the Executive Committee for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Wichita, alongside sitting on the boards of the Great Plains Nature Center and Hutchinson YMCA, as well as the Reno County Economic Development Advisory Board.

He’s also the founder and owner of Chunky Chet’s, a cookie food truck that has become a recognizable part of the community, so much so that it also holds a permanent location at the Kansas State Fair.

For Krstolich, being a Shocker is something that extends beyond graduation. “It makes me proud to be a Wichita State University alumnus. When I’m out and about, I have that Shocker pride because of such a good experience here.” And to him, Shocker pride is simple. “It means you’re part of something bigger than being from a university. If you’re a Shocker, you’re family.”

Whether it’s connecting communities through new broadband access, supporting local nonprofits, or simply just being recognized while walking down the street, 2026 Young Alumni Award winner James Krstolich demonstrates that leadership is not measured just by titles or accomplishments. It is measured by lives impacted, and stories listened to.

Krstolich was selected as one of the top five honorees in WSU’s inaugural 35 Under 35 class and was recognized as the recipient of the Young Alumni Award at the annual Heritage Gala on Friday, Oct. 2.

“It’s an absolute honor; I truly am humbled by this. I just want to be able to congratulate all the other honorees on what they’ve accomplished in their career,” he says. “It’s really one of those full-circle moments.”
