Patti and Jim Zielke help Promise for the Future campaign gain momentum
Patti and Jim Zielke attended the National Invitation Tournament in New York City. Men’s basketball is one of their passions and one of the areas designated for their planned gift established during the Promise for the Future campaign.
The Wichita State University Foundation has a goal to establish 100 new planned gifts during the Promise for the Future campaign, which kicked off July 1, 2010. In the first 11 months of the campaign, supporters of WSU have made 42 gifts. The campaign is scheduled to run until Dec. 31, 2011.
“While planned gift donors use many tools to make their legacy gifts, they all have in common positive experiences related to the university,” said Mike Lamb, WSU Foundation vice president for planned and annual giving.
One of the couples who have recently created two planned gifts is Patti ’88, ’95 and Jim ’86 Zielke. They elected to give gifts for areas to which they individually identify. Both are graduates from the W. Frank Barton School of Business and enjoy athletics.
“It seemed very natural to split our gifts between the college from which we both graduated,” said Patti, “and a couple of athletic programs, men’s basketball and women’s volleyball, that we have enjoyed supporting over the years.”

The Zielkes selected both of their retirement funds to create their gifts.
“It was very simple to use our retirement accounts without needing to establish a trust or change our existing wills — it was basically a five-minute process,” said Jim. “Additionally, because taxation of retirement accounts typically does not end at death, it’s very tax efficient to use this type of asset for planned giving.”
Jim graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in accountancy. He was a member of the Student Alumni Association and served as president of the WSU chapter of Beta Theta Pi. Patti received a Bachelor of Business Administration in finance and also was a member of the Student Alumni Association and served as president of the WSU chapter of Delta Gamma in addition to lettering in women’s volleyball. Later she received a Bachelor of Business Administration in accountancy. Not surprising, both are life members of the WSU Alumni Association.
“Patti and I have been very blessed to have been associated with Wichita State for nearly 30 years,” said Jim.
“We both have benefited greatly from our experiences there as students and also as alumni. After graduation, we have remained in Wichita and believe that WSU is an important part of what makes this community so great. Over the years, we have stayed in touch with the university through many activities and organizations, and we are also now connected through our daughter who will graduate from WSU next year.”
Patti and Jim are just two of the many people who have stepped forward during this campaign to guarantee the success for future Shockers and university programs. If you want to join them, please contact Lamb at (316) 978-3804 or email@example.com.
The Promise for the Future campaign is an effort by the WSU Foundation to inform supporters about the impact of including a gift to WSU in their estate plans.
