These Shockers leave lasting legacies

ERLA A. (HUTCHINSON) ALEXANDER ’60, economics graduate who worked at Boeing in Wichita before relocating to New York and holding positions with the National Bureau of Economic Research and, later, Price Waterhouse. A CPA, she was also an accomplished violinist and a staunch supporter of women’s rights, having been twice elected treasurer of the National Women’s Political Caucus, Dec. 11, 2024, Fairfax, Connecticut.

JOHN E. BATTITORI ’61, physical education graduate who played Shocker football; teacher and coach at public schools in Oakley, Plainville and Palco, all in Kansas; high school principal and superintendent in Coffeyville, Kansas; retired Girard, Kansas, superintendent (1988-2000), Jan. 14, 2025, Girard.

BARBARA A. (BATTERY) BINFORD ’53, homemaker and Alpha Tau Sigma sorority member as a University of Wichita student, July 20, 2024, Oldsmar, Florida.

WSU CHORAL DIRECTOR HARRISON “BUD” BOUGHTON

Harrison C. “Bud” Boughton was professor and director of choral music at Wichita State for 40 years. His groups appeared at numerous national music conventions, including Music Educators National Conference, American Choral Directors Association, and Music Teachers National Association, and made several extensive tours of Europe and South America under his direction. After graduating from the University of Iowa, he taught public school music in Iowa and voice and choral music at William Jewell College and Evansville University before coming to the University of Wichita in 1961. He died Sept. 27, 2024 in Wichita.

SHARON “SHERRY” A. (AHART) BUSS ’80, business administration graduate who retired after 20 years as an American Airlines customer service agent in Los Angeles and Omaha, Nebraska, and then from the USPS as a mail carrier in Omaha, Jan. 20, 2025, Wichita.

NANCY (HUNTER) CLAUSING ’71, homemaker, secondary education graduate and part-time substitute teacher, Jan. 19, 2025, Wichita.

SHIRLEY J. (CLEGG) DIEKER ’80, IT professional who held management positions at several Wichita-based organizations, including Farm Credit Bank, Newman University, Fidelity Bank, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kansas; long-time supporter of Wichita State and its Alpha Phi sorority, Dec. 25, 2024, Olathe, Kansas.

KIAH D. DUGGINS ’17, business administration graduate, Barton scholar, former Miss Kansas finalist and civil rights lawyer whose career included work with the ACLU of Northern California; Neufeld, Scheck and Brustin LLP; and the Civil Rights Corps, Jan. 29, 2025, Washington, D.C.

AMANDA “MANDY” (DAVIS) FLEMING ’98, development professional with 20 years of experience working at such nonprofits as Heartspring, Youth Entrepreneurs and the WSUFAE, Sept. 13, 2024, Wichita.

GREYSON A. FOX ’21, criminal justice graduate who was a member of the trap and skeet shooting team at WSU and Oklahoma City Police Department officer, July 1, 2024, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

FLOYD L. “BUD” HANSEN ’61, secondary education graduate who taught at South High School and collaborated with Wichita Public Schools on the creation of the first educational TV programs in Kansas, pastor at churches in Maize and Benton, Kansas, and a Wichita State Shockers men’s basketball season ticket holder for more than 50 years, Jan. 4, 2025, Wichita.

DAWN M. (MILLER) HEFFLINGER ’86, elementary ed graduate who taught middle-school students in Wichita before moving to Washington, where she worked at Boeing as a project manager, a position she held for 21 years, July 12, 2024, Everett, Washington.

THEODORE “TED” G. HOSTETLER ’54, retired doctor who specialized in pulmonary medicine and practiced in Ventura County, California; U.S. Air Force flight surgeon with two years of service, Jan. 7, 2025, Walnut Creek, California.

BUSINESSMAN, SPORTSMAN AND SHOCKER FAN JOHN HURST

John W. Hurst, who owned and operated Hurst Liquor Store in Wichita, attended the University of Wichita and was a lifelong Shocker supporter. As a member of the WSU Alumni Association’s board of directors, he served on many alumni committees and was especially involved with the WSUAA’s Shocker Auction and its annual Shocker Golf Tournament. In 2000, he and his wife, Sherilyn “Sher,” were presented the Alumni Recognition Award for their years of active support. In February 2024, they were recognized as “Fans of the Game” at Charles Koch Arena. A sportsman who enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting and as a young man played baseball with the Detroit Tigers farm team, John Hurst died Feb. 11, 2025 in Valley Center, Kansas.

F. KENNETH NOEL III ’62, business administration graduate, U.S. Air Force veteran with 22 years of service, former USPS mail carrier, budget analyst for the State of Texas and an avid gospel and bluegrass musician, Aug. 21, 2024, Charlotte, North Carolina.
