Shockers always have interesting things to say

Shockers everywhere, at events long ago to happenings just the other day, always have something interesting to say. Take this sampling as a Shock Talk example:

“We have a celebration worthy lineup of exhibitions and programs scheduled throughout 2025 for our 50th year.”

TERI MOTT ’99, creative communications manager at the Edwin A. Ulrich Museum of Art, on the extensive art offerings and special events slated for the museum’s 50-year birthday bash. In addition to exhibitions and associated programs, the “U50” book highlighting the Ulrich’s rich history through the collection of 50 essays by noted writers and art personalities will make its debut at the Ulrich U50 Gala & Book Release Party from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, May 9 at Henry’s Place at NICHE.

“Celebrate the legacy of Prince E. McJunkins III, Muskogee’s own legendary athlete. Prince was the first NCAA player to pass for over 4,000 yards and rush for over 2,000 yards in his college career at Wichita State University, and he was named Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 1981 and 1982. Join us in renaming a portion of Denison Street to Prince McJunkins III Avenue on what would have been his 64th birthday.”

CITY OF MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA, Dec. 16, 2024, in its invitation to a street naming ceremony at the corner of N. 29th Street and Denison in honor of Prince McJunkins ’86, who played for the Shockers as a standout quarterback from 1979 to 1982. Presented the WSU Young Alumni Award in 1997, he died Feb. 9, 2021. A memorial scholarship fund in his name has been established at Wichita State through the WSUFAE.

“Plans are in place for the construction of a first-class locker room and office space for Shocker women’s bowling.”

GoShockers.com, about a generous gift from Wichita State bowling alumna Karma Mason ’77/84 and her husband, Gary, to spearhead the program’s facility enhancement project.

Mandy Fouse ’10, WSU Tech executive director of public affairs and executive communications, on the release of the second book in the Tech Tykes series co-written by Sheree Utash ’02, WSU Tech president. Beckham the Biologist and the Outdoor Adventure is the follow-up to Ella the Engineer and the Big Fix.

“We’re excited to have TBT back for a sixth time. Our fans now have the opportunity to help the AfterShocks maintain home court advantage through the championship game. We’re confident Shocker fans will again show why they’re the best fanbase in the country.”

BRAD PITTMAN, WSU senior associate athletic director, as quoted in a Wichita Eagle article about a new twist to the 2025 edition of The Basketball Tournament. Each host team will have the opportunity to keep home-court advantage all the way through to the $1 million championship game. Wichita, which is the longest-running host site in TBT’s 11-year history, is set to host eight teams in a total of seven games at Koch Arena from July 18-23.
