Where do you currently work and what do you do in your role there?
I work at the Ulrich Museum of Art as the Executive and Creative Director. I started working at the Ulrich in October 2022 and it has been wonderful getting to know the WSU community as well as the Wichita community as a whole.

How do you see inclusivity in the Ulrich?
I was born and raised in Brazil, and I’ve always been really attracted to museums, even at a young age. But when I went, I wouldn’t see myself in the walls of the museum. If you go, most collections are very male-centered, heterosexual, White; being a Latinx woman, I wouldn’t see myself within museum spaces. So, we’re thinking about how we change that and how to create belonging, not just at the Ulrich but within the university. Art has the power to create social change, but also to create that sense of belonging. When we see ourselves within a space, we also feel welcomed.

How do you see Wichita State impacting the Wichita business community?
WSU has been growing exponentially in the past few years, not only within campus but also in what the university has to offer to its students and the communities surrounding our campus. I see WSU impacting the local workforce with innovative thinkers and talented professionals.

How do you hope to see the university grow and change in the future?
I see the university expanding its impact nationally. I hope WSU’s growth will affect underserved communities with not only quality educational opportunities but also community engagement efforts.

What advice would you give to a college freshman?
Take your time choosing your electives, they might change the way you view the world. I would advise a student to take advantage of everything during their time at WSU. Don’t only think about what you’re learning but connect and network with others. Also, have fun! It’s a time that you can dedicate to your studies as well as your wellbeing. Don’t stress out too much.

What advice would you give to a college senior?
Look into internships and other professional experience opportunities; these will enhance your resume and chances of getting your dream job in the future.

What are you currently reading/watching/listening to?I listen a lot to Yann Tiersen, especially when I am writing or researching. I read a few books at a time—I have been enjoying Nicolas Bourriaud’s “Relational Aesthetics” and a collection of readings edited by Sheila Watson titled “Museums and Their Communities.” On TV, I have been watching Ted Lasso and Shrinking.
