Van Williams

Hugo Wall School recognizes Shocker alumnus

Van Williams ’89/17 was saluted with the 2023 Alumni of the Year Award for his professional work in local government and in the nonprofit field by Wichita State’s Hugo Wall School of Public Affairs. Williams earned a master’s degree in public administration from the school in 2017.

“I have much gratitude for the Hugo Wall School officials who have been my teachers, supporters and champions,” says Williams, who is currently the vice president of strategic communications and mentoring at Youth Horizons, a Wichita faith-based nonprofit serving at-risk youth and their families.

Williams, who also holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from WSU, began his professional career as a journalist. He says he was introduced to public service during his time as a Wichita Eagle investigative reporter covering the city government beat. He left the newspaper in 2005 after 16 years as a sports writer, news editor, election editor and City Hall reporter to accept, first, a lead communications position at Wichita City Hall and then, in 2018, as director of strategic communications for Sedgwick County.

“I’m thankful,” Williams says, “for my time working in noble professions with many fine public servants.”
