Truman Nguyen

What are you studying, and what year will you graduate?

I’m a nursing student at Wichita State. I will graduate next year, in Spring 2026.

What inspired you to pursue a degree in nursing?

During a hospital stay with my grandparents, I witnessed the dedication and care that the nursing staff provided them. My appreciation for the profession grew as I learned more about the level of clinical expertise required and their compassion during some of life’s most vulnerable moments.

I was also drawn to the versatility of a degree in nursing. Within this field, you grow continuously and can explore different opportunities throughout your career.

Why did you choose to attend WSU?

Wichita State was just the right fit for me. Living nearby campus allowed me to stay connected to my support system and community. WSU’s supportive campus environment has also been integral to my success as I’ve pursued my degree.

Affordability was another factor. I received a scholarship to attend Wichita State, and that investment relieved so many burdens, both financial and emotional. With the many demands of a nursing student’s schedule – including rigorous coursework, clinical hours and balancing personal responsibilities – my scholarship allowed me to focus on my studies without having the added stress of excessive student debt.

What’s been one of your most memorable moments (so far) at Wichita State?

During one of my clinical rotations, I had the opportunity to be present and assist during a Code Blue, which signifies a life-threatening medical emergency. Being given the opportunity to assist in patient care during this highly critical moment solidified my respect for the profession and reminded me why I chose nursing in the first place: to be there for the patient.

What has been most impactful during your time as a student?

Education opens doors. It empowers individuals with the confidence and knowledge to make a difference in their communities. In nursing, a quality education improves patient care. I know that mine is preparing me to provide patient care to the best of my abilities.
