Soundscapes

Close your eyes and think of being back on campus. What are the sounds you hear? Maybe it’s the laughter of students gathered at the entrance to the RSC – or the CAC, if you haven’t been to campus for a while. Maybe it’s the chatter of squirrels.
Or the mechanical thrum of the chemistry laboratory vents atop McKinley Hall. It’s possible, if you happened to be on campus inside the Duerksen Fine Arts Center on the evening of Feb. 11, you might now be thinking of a particular measure you heard of the music performed at the WSU School of Music’s annual Symphony Orchestra Concerto-Aria Concert in Miller Concert Hall.
Conducted by Mark Laycock, who holds the Ann Walenta Faculty of Distinction Endowed Professorship at WSU, the symphony orchestra played pieces by Boulanger, Bellini, Chaminade, Peck, Gershwin and Copeland and featured four student soloists: Pulip Han, soprano, from Seoul, South Korea; Hannah Kavanaugh, flute, Kansas City, Missouri; Helena Kopp, piano, Shawnee, Kansas; and, from Wichita, Miranda Marler on timpani.
