A.J. and Jean Bachus Scholarship

Abraham Jacob Bachus, a native of Russia, came to Wichita in 1937. He founded A.J. Bachus Company, which dealt in scrap metals, but was equally successful in real estate and investment ventures. He and his wife, Jean, decided that they wanted to do something for the community, especially in support of higher education. They chose Wichita State University because ‘Wichita is our home.’ A private man, Mr. Bachus believed in the value of education, as he was unable to continue his own education beyond high school. In 1979, Mr. and Mrs. Bachus established the A.J. and Jean Bachus Scholarship, which was at the time the university’s largest scholarship awarded purely on academic merit. Through this fund, the dreams of students are realized as well as the dreams of a compassionate giver; ‘He was able to live his dream of a college education through the achievements of our students said Mrs. Bachus.
