Barry and Cindy Schwan Endowed Scholarship in the College of Education
Barry Schwan attended Wichita State University for one year, completing his degree in 1975 at the University of Colorado. After teaching middle school, he returned to Wichita to become president of the House of Schwan, the family-owned business since 1960 when Barry’s father obtained the Wichita distribution area from Anheuser-Busch. Active within the Wichita community, serving on numerous boards, including the Sedgwick County Zoological Society, Wichita Children’s Home and the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission, he currently serves on the WSU Foundation’s National Advisory Council and Board of Directors.
Cynthia Cindy Schwan is a graduate of WSU with a bachelor’s in secondary education and a master’s in gerontology. She is a member of the Women of Wichita Charitable Foundation, and serves on the boards of directors for Exploration Place and Wichita Children’s Home.
In 2002, both were recipients of the Commerce Community Service Award.
Former teachers, Mr. and Mrs. Schwan wanted to honor those teachers who go above and beyond providing scholarships to those student teachers who will strive to meet this goal. In 1998, they established the Barry and Cindy Schwan Endowed Scholarship in the College of Education.
