Cecil W. and Helen J. Dorman Scholarship Fund

Mrs. Helen Dorman was a much-loved and respected Wichita businesswoman. She grew up in her family’s retail business. Mrs. Dorman majored in psychology at the University of Wichita and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1946. After a five-year stint as a social worker for Sedgwick County, she changed careers. In 1952, she opened Helen Mac’s Children’s Shop, and in 1982, Dorman’s Women’s Wear. Mrs. Dorman died in 1995.

Mr. Cecil Dorman owned a construction company and infused his business dealings with his belief that people should help others. He took great pride in his work and gave a lifetime guarantee on every house he built. Mr. Dorman graduated from North High and attended the University of Wichita. After he returned home from World War II in 1946, he and his father started Dorman Construction Co.

Mrs. Dorman loved her alma mater. When her husband died in 1985, she made a gift to the university to establish the Cecil W. and Helen J. Dorman Business Scholarship Fund in his memory.
