Chandler B. Hatfield Scholarship/Fellowship
Chandler Hatfield, the first member of his family to earn a college degree, graduated from Wichita University in 1942 with a bachelor’s in biological science, later earning a master’s in education administration. Beginning his teaching career in Augusta, Kansas, he later taught science and mathematics at Hamilton Junior High in Wichita. He became the principal of Mead Junior High, as well as Wichita Central, Horace Mann and Jardine. Believing in the ‘educational missions’ of his schools, he hired the first black schoolteacher in an integrated school following Brown vs. BOE, and established the first educable mentally handicapped classes and remedial reading, all at the secondary level.
In 1995, to honor their father’s distinguished educational career and in response to the national need for secondary science and mathematic educators, his two sons, Gary and Kenneth Hatfield, established the Chandler B. Hatfield Scholarship.
Dr. Gary Hatfield is a WSU alumnus with degrees in art history and psychology, and is a professor of philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Kenneth Hatfield is the owner of Sensoft, a computer software company in Washington, D.C.
