James Sutherland Garvey International Center Endowed Fund

James Sutherland Garvey grew up in Wichita, graduating from the University of Wichita in 1947 with a degree in English language and literature. After serving as 1st Lieutenant in the Philippines during World War II, he oversaw Garvey Farms Management and supervised Service Oil Company in Colby, Kan. After moving to Fort Worth, Texas, in 1959, he served as chairman of the board of Garvey Elevators Inc. Although he lived most of his life in Texas, the Distinguished Alumni and Newcomen honoree remained connected to WSU, at one time serving on the Alumni Association board of directors.

When he passed away in 2001, the James Sutherland Garvey International Center, which houses the offices of international education, was established in his memory. At the same time, his family established the James Sutherland Garvey International Center Endowed Fund, providing scholarships for students, stipends for faculty and international program development. With the Garvey family’s history of international business interests, the center and endowment are a fitting tribute to Mr. James Garvey.
