Sutcliffe Family Phi Delta Theta Scholarship

This scholarship was established in honor of four brothers in the Sutcliffe family who were members of Phi Upsilon Sigma fraternity and/or Phi Delta Theta fraternity while at Wichita University or Wichita State University. All grew up in Chanute. The oldest, Dale Dean Sutcliffe, won a basketball scholarship to Wichita University, playing under Coach Ralph Miller. After serving in the military, he joined his father’s company, Sutcliffe Pipe & Supply, in Chanute. He ran the business until his death in 1998.

Donald Sutcliffe grew up in Chanute, Kansas, and enrolled in Wichita University in 1955. He graduated in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering. He began a long career with Boeing, retiring in 1995 after 37 years as an engineering manager and senior principal engineer in aeromechanics. Ronald Sutcliffe also grew up in Chanute and enrolled in Wichita University in 1955. He spent nine years in the oil and gas business in Chanute, then 41 years in banking with the FDIC. Terry Joe Sutcliffe attended Wichita State University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in business in 1965. He founded Lawrence Bank in Lawrence, Kansas, which he sold in 2005. He retired from First State Bank in Shawnee, Kansas, of which he was part-owner. In all, he had a successful 48-year career in banking.
