Thursday Afternoon Music Club Carol & Elton Holman Endowed Flute Scholarship

Since its creation in the early 1900s, the Saturday Afternoon Music Club has been an organization devoted to the study and performance of music. The members recognized the need for creating scholarships and, more than 50 years ago, awarded their first annual scholarship to a young bass-baritone student.

Now known as the Thursday Afternoon Music Club, the group continues to provide support, not only for students, but for the entire music community. Students receiving its scholarships perform an annual concert each spring, allowing club members a chance to view the rewards of their contributions.

In 1985, the Thursday Afternoon Music Club established a scholarship following Carol Holman’s passing using memorials from friends and family. Mrs. Holman graduated from the University of Wichita with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education. She taught flute from 1942 to 1956 and organized and became director of the university’s first audiovisual department, now known as the Media Resources Center. Mrs. Holman also was a founder of the Wichita Symphony and a former Thursday Afternoon Music Club president. Mrs. Holman’s husband, Elton, passed away in 1996. The scholarship serves as a lasting memorial to the Holmans.
