Veta McMahan Memorial Scholarship

After graduating from the University of Wichita in 1930, a bachelor’s in education. Ms. Veta McMahan began her long journalism career at the Wichita Beacon. She was the women’s club editor and held that post for 12 years. During World War II, she was a general reporter at the Milwaukee Sentinel and St. Louis Globe-Democrat.

Ms. McMahan moved to California where she worked at the Valley News in Van Nuys for more than 23 years. During that time she won second place in a California Newspaper Publishers writing contest, was listed in Who’s Who of Women in Communications and was among the first group of women to be initiated into the Los Angeles chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, National Journalism Society.

Ms. Veta McMahan established this scholarship in 1983 to benefit her alma mater upon her death. She died in 1994.

The Veta McMahan Memorial Scholarship is for general scholarships.
