Walter Wine Memorial Scholarship

Mr. Walter Wine met and married Marie Miller in 1949, while they were both students at the University of Wichita. They had two sons, born in 1951 and 1955. During that time, he earned his Bachelor of Arts in education in 1952, and in 1964, he earned his Master of Education. In 1950, Mrs. Wine earned her Bachelor of Arts in education.

Mr. Wine was extremely proud of being a Wichitan and a Shocker. His son, Mr. Stanley Wine, said, ‘He bled black and gold.’ He was also very proud of his family’s World War II service. He and his three brothers all served at the same time. He was stationed in the Philippines and was able to attend college because of the GI Bill. Mr. Wine was teaching at Hamilton Junior High when he suffered a fatal heart attack in 1977. He was 54.

Mrs. Wine and her family established the Walter Wine Memorial Scholarship in his honor. Mr. Wine was very grateful of the assistance that the GI Bill had given him, so he wanted the opportunity to help another student.
