Wesley McCarty Scholarship
Ralph Wesley McCarty graduated summa cum laude from Wichita State University in 1974 with a degree in political science. A compassionate young man, he was considered to have the ‘soul of Thoreau’ by family and friends. While battling leukemia, he maintained both mental and physical strength, even winning first place in a tri-state regional weight lifters meet while undergoing chemotherapy treatment. When he passed away in 1980, his parents wanted to honor the spirit of their son by creating a scholarship reflecting their son’s interests and intellect. The R. Wesley McCarty Scholarship was established with the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, honoring the ‘gentle strength’ of this young man.
