WSU’s longest tradition is a tough act to follow

Hippodrome

WSU students have hosted and performed in Hippodrome since 1928, making this theatrical event the longest-running tradition in Shocker history.

With each generation of Shocker students, new traditions and experiences are born and memories created. But no tradition has outlasted the treasured spring event of Hippodrome, which has welcomed the outrageous and heartfelt creativity of Shockers since 1928.

Hippodrome originated as a one-day stunt competition for student organizations. In time, the event evolved alongside heightening cultural awareness, becoming an inclusive tradition featuring a full week of activities where students sang, danced and acted on stage for an audience of their peers.

Today, individuals can participate in the talent show or emcee the event, and groups—commonly campus fraternities and sororities—perform in a skit competition. This tradition provides Shockers with the opportunity to showcase their creativity and theatrical panache, as well as work as a team for a sizable traveling trophy, a cash prize and bragging rights until the next year.

Aside from World War II and the Covid-19 pandemic, students have gathered for Hippodrome each spring, come rain or shine. As one Shocker student wrote in WSU’s 1928 yearbook, “The spirit of youth now demands fun as the final requisite of complete development.” How aptly did this early Shocker capture the spirit of WSU’s beloved, longest-running tradition.

As true then as it is now, WSU students relish the opportunity to create, perform and act a fool onstage alongside fellow Shockers.
